Healthy Tips-What Type of Eater/Exerciser are you?
Halloween is almost upon us which means candy (and temptation) is all around!! Did you run out and buy the bulk bags of candy three weeks ago when they hit the shelves only to find that you are now down to two mini chocolates and a lollipop? Or perhaps you decided to wait until a few hours before the little goblins come knocking on your door so that you don't have to fight the urge to sneak "just one" from the bag beforehand. Or maybe you are one of those disciplined souls who can buy the candy, leave it out in the prepared serving bowl, and simply tell yourself "that is not for me!" It doesn't really matter which type you are (and there are many more), but it is important to recognize how those different "personality types" influence the choices you make with regard to eating and exercise. Being able to identify what will "trip you up", helps you to avoid actually being "tripped up" and will help you stick to your healthy lifestyle goals. Cutting back on junk food or finding time to exercise is never easy-no matter how disciplined one may actually be. But if you identify your personality type, you can find ways to successfully achieve the healthy balance we all seek. Think about what motivates you to make healthy lifestyle choices: I want to be slim, I want to be healthy, I want to be in shape, I want to wear a bikini, I want to play soccer with my kids for more than five minutes, I want to set a good example for my family, I want to meet a mate, I want to fit into my favorite jeans, I want to perform at my best at my job.... Then consider what triggers cause you to lose that motivation: I am not seeing results, I am tired and stressed, I don't care anymore, the moves are too hard, I am too busy with my job and kids, the weather is bad, I'm bored with my routine, time just slips away... Once you realize why you eat the way you do, or why you exercise (or don't!!), you can better monitor your actions and control your behavior. Below is a list of some helpful hints that you might try to help you work consistently toward your healthy goals and achieve the results you want!! 1) Schedule exercise just like any other appointment or meeting. 2) Eat only when you are hungry. No picking out of boredom or stress. 3) Find a friend to exercise with you. Help keep each other committed and motivated. 4) Watch your food portions. When dining out split entrees or take half home for lunch. 5) Add variety to your exercise routine. Change the direction of your run or add a new strength move each week. 6) Throw away unhealthy temptations in the cupboard. Out of sight out of mind! 7) Reward yourself with "treats" that are not food. A manicure or movie night instead of margaritas. 8) Walk as much as you can. Avoid the escalator or elevator and take the stairs when possible. 9) Keep those favorite jeans nearby for inspiration or post a flattering photo on the refrigerator as a friendly reminder. 10) Find enjoyment in the food that you eat, the exercise that you do and the life that you lead! Good mental health is as important as good physical health. Think about the food and fitness choices you are making and you will find more enjoyment in both.
